oats

Oats are a highly nutritious whole-grain food. Rolled oats are oat groats that have been dehusked, steamed, rolled flat and toasted.

Why is it good for my body? Oats are rich in fiber and carbs, but higher in protein and fat than many other grains. They are also full of vitamins and minerals, including manganese, phosphorus, magnesium, copper, iron, zinc, folate, vitamin B1 and vitamin B5. Oats help reduce cholesterol and blood sugar levels.
Where does it come from? The early history of oats is unclear. They were once thought to be a weed in barley and wheat fields. Northern Europe and Scotland became the biggest producers of oats when mills were built there. In 1877, Ehrrichsen invented a revolutionary groat-cutting machine in Ohio. This machine aided in the production of steel-cut oats that were the rolled into flakes to become either rolled oats or quick oats.
What are ways to eat it? Oats are commonly eaten as cereal or porridge. They are also staples in baking, can be ground into flour, and is a main component of granola. Try Doctor Yum's Overnight Oats and our Energy Bites for some of our favorite ways to enjoy rolled oats!
